Ron Blomberg (Getty Images)
He may not be a household name but he has become a great trivia fact. On April 6th, 1973 New York Yankee Ron Blomberg became the first Designated Hitter (DH) in baseball history. This first came in game against the rival Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Blomberg was walked in his first home plate appearance against pitcher Luis Tiant. Blomberg finished the season with a .321 batting average in 301 plate appearances. His career ended with the Whit Sox after the 1978 season.
To this day the DH remains exclusive to the American League. The DH position has caused mush controversy and excitement over the years. Many have debated through the years that the DH position hurts the game. Most feel that in the game of baseball the pitcher should be in the hitting lineup. The DH has been criticized for taking away from baseball’s tradition. 40 years later I think it is safe to say that it has become apart of the tradition, at least in the American League.

The incredible action of week 1 carried into week 2 on Sunday. Week 2 brought many great match ups and answers to questions unanswered in week 1. 2centsworthofsports.com brings you the top 3 stories from the second week of the NFL.
Eli Manning Rallies His Giants Past The Buccs, Has A Career Game

Eli Manning
(Getty Images)
Eli Manning and the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants suffered a disappointing loss in week 1 to the Cowboys. Anxious to prove they could repeat as Champions, the Giants played the Buccs in week 2 in what turned out to be a crazy game. The Buccs came out strong in the 1st half leading the Giants 24-13 going into half time. The Giants came out of half time only scoring 3 points in the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter is when the Giants picked it up a notch by scoring 25 points. The Giants defeated the Buccs 41-34. The game was one of the wildest of the first 2 weeks. Eli Manning faltered early with 3 interceptions but made up for it with 510 yards passing and throwing for 3 touchdowns. The 510 passing yards were a career record for Manning in one game. The Buccs looked really strong in this game but lost due to Eli and his comeback heroics. Eli and the Giants showed in week 2 that they are ready to attempt a repeat at the Championship this year.
Andrew Luck Wins 1st Career Game

Andrew Luck
(Getty Images)
The number 1 overall pick in April’s Draft Andrew Luck came in with high expectations. In week 1 he did not meet them, week 2 was another story. Luck helped his Indianapolis Colts win their 1st game of the season on Sunday against then Minnesota Vikings, winning by a score of 23-20. Luck was 20-31 passing with 224 yards in the air and rushed for 21 yards. Luck scored his first 2 touchdown passes of his career in this game, his first was to Dwayne Allen and his second to Reggie Wayne. More importantly Luck threw no interceptions which was a huge improvement from week 1 where he threw 3. Luck has definitely improved from week 1 and should develop into a really good NFL QB over the course of the season.
Matt Ryan And The Falcons Defeat Peyton Manning And The Broncos On Monday Night

Matt Ryan
(Getty Images)
On Monday Night the Broncos came into Atlanta to face the Falcons in Prime Time. Matt Ryan and the Falcons were victorious and made a statement. The Falcons are likely back to the form they were in a couple of years ago. Matt Ryan led his team to the win with excellent passing. Ryan had 219 yards passing and had 2 touchdowns. Manning on the other hand had a rough night, throwing only 1 TD pass and throwing for 3 interceptions. The Falcons scored quickly and went into halftime with a 20-7 lead. In the 3rd quarter the Falcons scored 7 points while the Broncos had 0. In the 4th quarter Manning tried to lead his team to the comeback victory as his brother Eli did on Sunday but could not pull it off. The Broncos were able to score only 14 points in the final quarter. The final score was 27-21 in favor of the Falcons. It was an interesting match up with and even more interesting outcome. The Falcons are going to be a strong team for their NFC foes to compete with this season.

Week 2 of the College Football is over just in time for the first Sunday of NFL action. There were some great games and performances on Saturday. Let’s take our weekly look at 2centsworthofsports.com’s top 3 stories of NCAA action.
2 Major Teams Debut And Lose In the SEC
Texas A&M and Missouri made their SEC debuts on Saturday. Much was said and predicted about their debuts in one of College Football’s best conference. Both teams played two of the toughest teams in the SEC, the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs respectively. A&M hosted the number 24th ranked Florida Gators at home and played the Gators in a nail biter. The game was close the entire time and came down to a winning TD for Florida to take the game. The final score was 20-17 for UF over Texas A&M. In Missouri there was another great game that was really close until the 4th quarter where the number 7th ranked Bulldogs pulled away from Missouri, scoring 17 points in the last quarter. The final score was 41-20 in favor of UGA. It was a rough day for both debuting teams, they did however show they belong in the powerhouse conference.
Matt Barkley Throws 6 TD’s In Win Over Syracuse
The 2nd ranked team in the country the USC Trojans came into New York to play Syracuse. The game was not as easy of a win that many expected for the Trojans, winning 49-29 on the road and advancing their record to 2-0. Matt Barkley’s performance is the biggest story of this game. Barkley was 23 for 30 passing with 187 yards and 6 touchdowns. Barkley only threw 1 interception the entire game. Barkley has really developed into the player he was expected to be coming out of high school just a couple of years ago. This was a great statement making performance for the USC quarterback.
#13 Wisconsin Falls To Unranked Oregon State
In what was the biggest upset of a ranked team this Saturday, Oregon State defeated Wisconsin. This game was a low scoring affair with the final score of 10-7 in favor of the Beavers. The star of the game for the Beavers was their QB Sean Mannion who had 276 yards passing and 1 touchdown pass. The Wisconsin Badgers really under played themselves in this road game. The Badgers will have to make some adjustments going ahead into the season if they want to remain in the top 25 rankings. The Beavers could likely end up in the top 25 with this win.

The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones helped make history this past week. It was not good history by any means. The UFC was forced to cancel their September 1st show in Las Vegas. Jones is completely responsible for this cancellation. When his challenger went down due to injury on Thursday a wild ride began that did not slow down until Friday afternoon.

Jon Jones
(Getty Images)
UFC President Dana White was able to get a replacement in Chael Sonnen. Jones would not face Sonnen with only 8 days before the fight. Jones’ Coach Greg Jackson tried to take the blame for not letting his fighter take the fight. With that situation Dana White was forced to cancel the show and blamed Jackson for being a “sport killer”.
The next option for the fight was Lyoto Machida. Machida was due a title shot but not this soon. It was announced that Machida would take the place of Henderson and the fight would be moved to the UFC 152 show on September 22nd in Toronto. Machida later declined and the UFC went after another former champion to fill the spot. That former champion was Shogun Rua, he too declined the fight.
With no other options for a main event fighter for Jones, Dana White chose UFC veteran Vitor Belfort. Belfort accepted and the fight will take place on the UFC 152 show. Belfort has great hands but does not have the genetic gifts that Jones possesses. Belfort is much like a Dan Henderson type fighter in the sense that he is a dangerous veteran that could win but will likely lose. This 24 hour period of insanity is a true low point for the UFC.
Traditionally when a fighter goes down due to injury the replacement is usually accepted by the remaining fighter. Jones did not want to follow suit. Because of this he will drive his appeal down with a fan base that does not really see him as a star yet. Jones is a fan favorite for the hardcore MMA fans but not casual fans who are the ones that really make or break a star and a champion at the ticket window. Jones has gone Heel (a pro wrestling term for bad guy) but he is doing it the wrong way.
MMA has had its share of heels through its history. The most recent being Brock Lesnar and Chael Sonnen. Both of those fighters know what they are doing with their characters and play the role well. They make calculated moves that make themselves the bad guys but still marketable and appealing. Jones does not have the personality or the where with all to be a true heel.
Marketing was stated as a possible reason Jones did not take the fight. Jones was worried that he may not keep his hot streak alive and possibly lose and hurt his selling potential. If that was his concern he would have taken the fight with Sonnen. Even if he lost and came back to another title shot he would be in a better light and position than he is by not taking this fight. Sonnen was the perfect opponent, he had not been training and would be moving up a weight class. Jones on the other hand would be peaking for the fight still and would have had 3 months of training under his belt. Now Jones will be know as the man responsible for destroying UFC 151.
There are many victims from Jones’ decision. The Cable companies who promoted the fight and where counting on their percentage of the PPV numbers. The UFC has also spent a lot of money promoting the fight, they even had a huge billboard at Times Square in New York City. The fighters who will have to wait on a pay day because their fight has to be moved to October or even November. The most hurt will be the fans who have spent their money to fly into Las Vegas, stay in a hotel and wait to have their tickets refunded by the UFC.
Jon Jones will likely become a villain from this situation, which for most fighters could be a positive thing. Not for Jones who needs to be liked. He recently signed a deal with Nike and when it come to merchandise if you are not liked people will not buy you things. Jones has a long road ahead of him, can he shake this situation? Maybe, he could come out on UFC 152 and knock out Belfort and everyone will forget about this like it never happened. It could be something that sticks with him his entire career and effects his earning and drawing potential.

Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to 26 games on Wednesday night. Reyes went 1-3 in the 13-0 victory for the Marlins. The Marlins will play the final game of their 3 game series with the Mets on Thursday at 12:10pm EST. The Mets pitching sensation R.A. Dickey will take the mound for the Mets. Dickey has a 14-3 record and has an 2.82 ERA. Reyes has not hit well off of Dickey in the past, going 2-12 with 3 strikeouts against the pitcher. Reyes will have his work cut out for him on Thursday against a pitcher like Dickey.

Jose Reyes kept his streak alive tonight in a winning effort over his former team. The Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets by a score of 4-2. Reyes went 1-4 and received his hit in the fourth inning. Reyes now has a hit in 25 consecutive games. Reyes has the longest hitting streak in the Majors this year.
The Marlins will play the Mets again on Wednesday Night when Chris Young Takes the hill for the Mets. Young is 3-5 this year with a 4.22 ERA. Reyes has yet to attract major attention for his streak thus far. If he makes it past 30 he will undoubtedly not be ignored any more.

Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to 24 games today. The hit came in the top of the 4th inning against Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals. Reyes now has the record this season for most consecutive games with a hit. He has been on fire since July 13th and shows no sign of slowing down. The Marlins have been having a terrible season and Reyes is the only thing that the fans can be proud of. We could be witnessing history in the Making.

The Marlins will have a day off on Monday before taking on the Met in New York City. This is exciting for the fact that Reyes used to play for the Mets and has a chance to continue his streak in a familiar place. The sports world will more than likely be paying a lot more attention to this streak now that it is the record for this season. I can’t wait to see how long this ride can go.

Jeremy Lin with the Houston Rockets.
(Getty Images)
Last year’s breakout star Jeremy Lin was signed by the Houston Rockets earlier this week. Lin signed a 3 year, $25 Million deal. The Rockets had Lin in their training camp at the beginning of last season but let him go. The New York Knicks had a chance to match the offer given to Lin but declined. Houston took what many consider a gutsy move for the 23 year-old Point Guard.
Jeremy Lin busted onto the Sports Scene last February when he stepped into the starting PG spot previously held by the then injured Carmelo Anthony. Lin made the most of his opportunity by becoming one of the teams leaders. He dominated games and flat out won many for them during his strong 3 week stretch. Lin was silenced quit a bit when the team started facing off against teams like the Miami Heat. Lin suffered a season ending injury in March and the “Linsanity” in New York was put on hold.
The craze that Jeremy Lin ignited in New York was incredible. Over night the city became crazy over this young and recently unknown star. “Linsanity” was the name and it was popping up on signs and merchandise all over Madison Square Garden and New York. The possibilities for marketing this type of a player were endless.
“Linsanity” has moved to the great state of Texas. Will he continue to flourish into the superstar many feel he will be. That is hard to say but if he does the Knicks made a bad decision. At this point the Knicks need a star with the charisma and appeal that Lin has. He has been replaced by a few players nearing the end of their career while he is just beginning his.
If Jeremy Lin’s star continues to rise the Knicks will never forget letting him go. The New York fans will not let them forget what a grave mistake they made. The Knicks have been toiling in obscurity for far to long and Lin had shown during the month where he dominated the sports media that he could be the spark the team needed. The city of New York needed a star like Lin. The level of regret rides on how well Lin develops and evolves his game. As of this moment it looks like a bad decision for Knicks to let this player go. Only time will tell and we should know a lot in just 5 months.

The Florida Marlins have been one of the most unusual franchises in the history of baseball. They have only been in existence for 19 years and have had really highs and dramatic lows. They have captured 2 World Series Championships, the first in 1997 and 2003. They have also had some of the worst teams in recent memory. Their 1998 squad was the first team to lose over 100 games after winning the World Series. The Marlins have been up and down since their last title. I have decided to use the technology available today with sports simulators like Whatifsports.com to find out what Marlins team was the greatest. Before that I will give you an idea what we have here in each team, so let’s take a look.
The 1997 Florida Marlins (92-70 record, entered the N.L. Playoffs by way of the Wild Card)

The 1997 Florida Marlins
(Getty Images)
The Marlins entered their 5th season with high hopes. The field was full of great players of that time. Bobby Bonilla came in as the big free agent acquisition from the previous off season. The squad also had the hard hitting Gary Sheffield, “Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine and the best fielding catchers of that season in Charles Johnson to name a few. This Marlins team was assembled by then owner Wayne Huizenga to turn the tax payers of Miami onto the idea of funding a baseball only stadium. That did not happen but the team did accomplish the unbelievable. The Marlins swept the San Fansisco Giants in the N.L. Divisional round and headed into the N.L.C.S. versus a very dominant Atlanta Braves team. The Marlins won that series in 6 games. The most memorable game of that series was when the rookie Cuban defector Livan Hernandez throw for 15 strike outs in game 5 and defeated one of the best pitchers of the day in Greg Maddux with a 2-1 victory. The Marlins charged into the World Series against the Cleveland Indians. The Marlins won the first game which was played in Miami in the state of Florida’s 1st World Series Game. The teams kept switching off wins the entire World Series. In game 7 of the 1997 World Series the Marlins came out on top when Edgar Renteria batted in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th, which was the mid season acquisition of Craig Counsell. This team was a great on e and will go down as the state of Florida’s 1st World Series Champions.
The 2003 Florida Marlins (91-71 record, entered the N.L. Playoffs by way of the Wild Card)

The 2003 Florida Marlins
(Getty Images)
This Marlins squad was built a lot in part to the 1998 fire sale. One of the players received during the sale would end up being the 1st baseman from the 2003 championship team Derek Lee. Many of the draft picks acquired during that time drafted many of the players on this championship team. When the season started the team did not have very high expectations but was expected to fair better than they did in the first two months of the season. The Marlins had a record of 16-22 when manager Jeff Torborg was fired and replaced by 72 year old Jack McKeon in May. The season was about to turn around in large part to mid season call ups Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. The team which also acquired veteran Jeff Conine back during the middle of the season made it into the playoffs through a wild card bid. Like the team did in 1997 this team beat the Giants in the Divisional Playoff Series to advance to the N.L.C.S. to face the Chicago Cubs. The Marlins won the N.L.C.S. against the Cubs in 7 games. The team was almost eliminated in game 6 but had a miracle in the late innings of the game and were able to stay alive until game 7. The World Series had the Marlins in the usual spot as the underdog against the New York Yankees. The Marlins rode the incredible pitching of Josh Beckett to beat the Yanks in 6 games. This team shocked the world more than the 1997 team. This squad was also younger and more inexperienced than the 1997 squad but proved themselves to be just a great.
The Simulation via Whatifsports.com – 1997 Marlins VS 2003 Marlins
I decided to go with a one game championship to determine which World Series team was the best. The 2003 squad got the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The 1997 team came up with 1 run in the bottom of the first to trail by only 1 run. The next and only additional runs of the game came in the 5th inning when the 1997 team put 2 runs on the board which would seal the victory. The 1997 team had 10 huts while the 2003 team had just 7 hits total. Kevin Brown won the game with 8 innings pitched and Rob Nen got the save. Gary Sheffield had a home run and 2 RBI’s in the winning effort. The losing pitcher was Carl Pavano and the 2003 team had runs scored by Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo the only RBI came from Derek Lee. This was a very tight game and had some good pitching from both teams. The offense of both teams was toned down a bit by both Kevin Brown and Carl Pavano.
Champions: 1997 Florida Marlins

The Ultimate Marlins team the 1997 Florida Marlins

My thoughts
This was a dream match up that all Marlins fans would love to see but unfortunately we have only simulation. I feel that if we could see these two great teams face off this is the likely outcome. The 1997 team was more experienced and would have handled the game much better than the 2003 team. The offensive power was greater and the bats were better on the 1997 team. Both teams were great but on this night the 1997 Florida Marlins proved themselves to be the ultimate champions.

Bud Selig at the 2010 MLB Draft
(Mike Stobe/Getty Images)
The 2012 Major League Baseball Draft starts today. Many baseball fans with the exception of the die hard fans don’t care about it or even know it happening today. This will be the fourth year the 1st round has been televised. Much like the NFL’s Draft, MLB will hold the event in New York City. It will also start in prime time at 7pm EST. There is however a big difference between the MLB Draft and the NBA and NFL Drafts.
The NBA and NFL have both had televised drafts for many year. Both leagues have been really successful with their drafts. Building fan excitement every year when the NFL draft approaches. The NBA also has a lot of fan attention leading to their June draft every year. Baseball wants very much to bring the same excitement to their draft.
The MLB draft will not reach the level of the other sports drafts anytime soon. There are many things baseball has going against it. One of the blaring problems is lack of star power and players the fans can connect with. Many of the top players come out of the high school level. Unlike football, high school baseball is not followed as closely by many fans and usually only the die hard fans keep up with that level. The other players come from college baseball which like the previous topic is not followed by fans has much as football or basketball’s college level. Nor does college baseball get the same media attention during their season. There have been a few players that carried a lot of attention going into baseballs June Draft. Two of the most recent “big hype” national media type stars where the Washington Nationals Stephen Strasburg in 2009 and Bryce Harper in 2010. We won’t be seeing any baseball players going into the draft with the same media attention anytime soon.
When the stars are selected most don’t see the big leagues for at least a year. Some players need 2 to 5 years to develop to be major league ready. The NBA and NFL have the ability to excite fans with their drafts because the players will be on the field with the big clubs within months. Many player go on to a lot of success even in their first year in the other leagues. Baseball cannot do anything about this particular problem. Its a system that has worked for many years, it just does not cater to the draft.
For decades baseball held their draft non televised. In 2009 they started to air the 1st round on their MLB Network. Many fans won’t watch because they just can’t. The MLB Network is carried in far less homes than the networks that air the NBA and NFL Drafts. If fans did tune in they would see a room with very charismatic (I am being sarcastic) MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and a bunch of team representatives and only a couple of players if any in attendance. You would be better off just checking the internet to find out and not waste your time watching the broadcast.
MLB has a lot they need to work on to make the Draft watchable and to increase excitement for it. The first thing they need to work on is getting more players involved in the event. Having player in attendance would help the broadcast, with the players showing emotion and excitement when selected by the clubs. The MLB needs to also work on getting the names and faces of the upcoming draft prospects out there. They could broadcast high school games featuring top prospects. Finally baseball needs to get a deal with a better network to air the event. That probably won’t happen until they improve the first two problems I previously stated.
Baseball is a great game and the draft deserves just as much fan fare as the other leagues. Until baseball can make the fans care we are going to have an event like we will see tonight, an unwatched and mostly unknown happening.
