On Saturday night March 30, 2013 Kobe Bryant moved up on the all time scoring list. Kobe Bryant surpassed NBA Hall Of Famer Wilt Chamberlain to become 4th on the list of the basketball greatest scorers. Bryant scored 19 points in the Lakers victory over the Kings in Sacramento, CA. Bryant now stands at 31,434 points for his career.
He now is behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone and Michael Jordan. Jordan is holding the 3rd spot on the list with 32,292. There are only 858 points separating Jordan and Kobe now. Bryant has already scored 1931 points this season. He has scored 2,000 points per season through his career. It is highly likely he will pass Jordan next season and take the 3rd position on the all time scoring list. When he passes Jordan he will elevate his legacy to the highest degree. Jordan is the Babe Ruth of basketball and this feat will cause many to rethink who was greater.

Kobe Bryant has been a very talented, entertaining and accomplished player during his career. He has had some off court issues and even some locker room drama. However when his career is over, his off court issues will pail in comparison to what he accomplished in the game. Kobe Bryant is a legendary player and we are lucky to be able to see the greatness he produces every night. This will be an exciting year coming up.
Defending 135lb womens champion Ronda Rousey beat Liz Carmouche in the first ever womens bout in the UFC. The victory came in the first round via armbar submission. Which is no surprise because her previous 8 victories were all delivered in the same fashion. There was however a point in the fight that Rousey looked to be in trouble. It came in the first minute of the fight when Carmouche was on Rousey’s back. Carmouche attempted to go for a choke and at one point had Rousey in a neck crank. Rousey stayed patient and was able to get Carmouche off of her and within a matter on minutes had her in an armbar. Carmouche quickly tapped and the fight was over.

With this fight history was made as it was not only the first womens fight in the UFC’s 20 year history, it was also the main event. Ronda Rousey will now be known as the first ever UFC womens champion. Rousey has definitely set her self up to become a mega star. Within 2 years she has gone from an unknown fighter fighting on low visibility Strickforce on Showtime events to main eventing in the biggest MMA promotion around. This is largely due to the way she has amassed her now 9 victories. All of her victories have come in the first round with an armbar submission, most of which came within under a minute of the fight. She has established the armbar as her finisher much like a pro wrestler has a signature finishing maneuver. This is a gimmick that could take her very far in the sport and also create a legend about her like Mike Tyson had in the 1980′s with his knockout punches.
Ronda Rousey will more than likely fight again by years end. The UFC does not have the other big name womens MMA fighter Chris Cyborg. Cyborg recently signed with Invicta. The UFC does have a fresh crop of talent to build up for her. Its pretty safe to say that her next fight regardless of the opponent will be a big draw. She has developed into a super star the like of which will overshadow the previous Queen of MMA Gina Carrano. It will be exciting to she where this crazy ride Rousey is on will end up.
The Red Sox are finally ready to face reality. That reality is that they need an overhaul to rebuild the team into a contender. The Red Sox had been ridding the spending train for a long time now. They won 2 world series titles in the last 8 years while spending crazy money. This year will be the 3rd year in a row the Sox will not make the playoffs. The Red Sox currently have a record of 60-66 and are 13.5 games back in the American League East.
The Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers are set to make a blockbuster trade at a time of the season you usually never see trades happen. The deal would have the Dodgers receiving Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto. While the Red Sox would receive the Dodgers top pitching prospects Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa, offensive prospects Jerry Sands and Ivan DeJesus and current Major Leaguer James Loney. The deal would free up a tremendous amount of money for the Red Sox, $262.5 million to be exact. It would be a record contract dump trade. It has been rumored as of Saturday that the Red Sox might be reconsidering giving up Adrian Gonzalez in the deal. Gonzalez has been the best performing of the players that could go to L.A. The Dodgers will be more accepting of a trade that includes Gonzalez.
The Red Sox would have no problem letting go of Carl Crawford who the team sign right before the start of the 2011 season. Crawford had been a great star in Tampa Bay and the Sox gave him a 7 year $142 million contract. Crawford had career low numbers in the 2011 season and has only played 31 games this year due to injury. Josh Beckett is another star who’s time has come to go for Boston. Beckett once was the best pitchers in the Majors but has now become a pitcher who might get you a win if your lucky. Beckett has only won 1 game in his last 13 starts and appears to be on the decline in his career. Its surprising but that is how things appear for Beckett still not at the dreaded 38 years of age where most pitchers fall off.
The Dodgers are ready to play big money ball and do it like other teams in their market have. The Dodgers are a really good team and are only 3 games back from 1st in the National League West. The Dodgers will be hoping that the change of scenery will benefit the players they will acquire from the Red Sox. It likely could, it has worked for Hanley Ramirez who they recently required from the Miami Marlins. The Dodgers are getting ready for September and a chase for the playoffs. They look like a team that is going to be a strong contender if they make the playoffs.
Where do the Red Sox go from here? That is an easy question to answer, they go for the free agents available in the off season and develop their prospects. With all of the freed up money they can pursue impact players that can start their franchise back on track towards the playoffs. The team has a recent history of signing top free agents and this deal allows them to do it again in a way that has brought them success. It is time for a fresh start for the Sox. The prospects they would land in this deal would help their future just as much if not more than possible free agents.
Both teams have until the early afternoon on Sunday to finalize this deal. It is very likely this deal will go down and when it does it will make history. How much this deal will effect both franchises is the most interesting part of this deal. While the Dodgers could get a boost now while the Sox might be setting up a bright future in this trade. Only time will tell how this story of the August blockbuster trade will end up.
After playing eight seasons for the Orlando Magic, Dwight Howard has been traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The trade had been rumored since yesterday became a reality on Friday. The trade involved The Lakers, Magic, Nuggets and 76ers. The Lakers ended up with Howard and sent Andrew Bynum to the 76ers who also recieved Jason Richardson from the Magic. The Nuggest landed Andre Iguodala from the 76ers while the Magic received Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Nikola Vucevic, Moe Harkless, three 1st round picks and a second round pick for 2013. It was the mega trade we had been expecting almost the entire summer.
Dwight Howard is leaving Orlando as a villain. He skipped out on a charity event recently in Orlando, that wasn’t going to win him any fans. Howard has been playing hardball with the team since the season ended. Yet the team still tried anything they could to make him happy enough to stay. The Magic fired coach Stan Van Gundy in May and the previous GM to appease Howard. Howard did not care he still wanted to leave as a free agent. The Magic had been that road before with Shaq in 1996 and were not about to let that happen this time around.
When trade rumors started Howard demanded going to the Brooklyn Nets and nowhere else. Howard put the team in a rough situation by lowering his trade value. He stated that he would not resign with any team other than the Nets or Mavericks when his contract is up after this season. A lot of interested teams quickly ran away not wanting to lose a lot for a one year stand with Dwight. Luckily for the Magic they were able to put together a deal that they can build a team for the future with. The team is ready to get on with life and with Dwight Howard out of the picture will be able to.
Dwight Howards legacy with the Magic will be a tarnished one. A story of feuding with his coach, stirring up trouble for the team and alienating himself from the fans of Orlando. The City of Orlando had been waiting for a star when they drafted Dwight in 2004. The team wanted to win a championship with Howard and the closest they came was the 2009 NBA Finals. The Lakers squashed the Magic in that year and the team never returned to the championship game since. The Magic should have realized earlier that Howard was not the man that could take them to a title.
Howard is now officially the most hated man in the NBA and it will not change anytime soon. He cares not about the team but himself. Howard has made his bed and no he has to sleep in it. Good riddance Dwight Howard.

A few weeks ago it looked like the drama that is Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic was coming to an end, but here we are with Howard still on a team he no longer wants to be on. The Magic want Howard to give the new management a chance but he wants a trade and wants one now. There is one problem though, there are no teams that for one want to have Howard for one season only to see him leave or a team with assets worthy of him.
The Houston Rockets were pushing hard for Howard going into the draft. Howard’s management even warned the team that if he were traded to Houston he would leave as a free agent next summer. Still the Rockets pursued Howard feeling that their legacy and how they would perform as a team with him would sway his decision to leave in 2013. The Magic were not offered a package of players that fit what they wanted.
Then came along the Brooklyn Nets, the team which Howard wants to ultimately end up with. The Magic were offered a deal that would involve the Nets and 2 other teams that would send the Magic Center Brook Lopez and a handful of other players. That deal was never accepted by the Magic and the Nets spent big money on Daron Williams and Lopez signed a contract extension with the team. The extension makes Lopez untradable until January. So the Magic will have to wait if they do in fact want Lopez. Lopez would be the only star player the Nets could include in a trade that would be a good deal for the Magic.
The Lakers are the latest team to be in talks with the Magic for Howard. The Lakers already traded away 2 future 1st round draft picks so that is off the table in a possible deal. The star player that could be involved in a deal between the Magic and Lakers would be Andrew Bynum. The problem with that scenario is two fold. The first problem is that Bynum is a free agent in 2013 and would have to sign if the Magic would acquire him and he has shown strong interest in being a free agent next year. The second issue is the Magic also want to unload a lot of their team and clean out some cap space. The Lakers cannot help them there. So the Magic stand with a player that is not looking to be going anywhere soon.
The Magic have been getting the rough end of this Howard situation. They are not finding any great deals but at the same time can’t afford for him to leave as a free agent and get nothing for him. Howard is really being tough with the team. The team has new management and is wanting to work something out with Howard. Howard does need to go but for the right price. The Magic should wait this out a little longer until they get a deal they can live with. The team will be set back many years if they don’t get players of value for Howard. This is a bad situation and a bad summer for the team and things don’t look to be getting better anytime soon.
One of the biggest sports stories of the year and possibly the last decade happened today. The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Presidential Oversight Comity signed the documents the will remove the BCS System and put a 4 team tournament in its place. It was the most hotly debated and demanded topic in the history of college football. Even the President of the United States weighed in with his opinion on the subject.
The BCS is soon to be gone, good riddance.

The BCS lasted for 14 years and was created to settle the controversy created by the bowl system that was formerly in place. The previous system would have team play their final games of the season in bowl games that a lot of the times did not help their case for being #1 and National Champions. The BCS was supposed to bring order by having the top 2 ranked teams battle it out to crown a National Champion. It however created a lot of controversy instead. There have been many teams over the years that have gone undefeated and still were out of the championship game. There was also a lot of corruption with the BCS Executives taking advantage of the system and wrongly using money to fund parties and put in their wallets. So the BCS can die a horrible death and rot as far as most football fans are concerned.
Up until now football was the only NCAA sport that did not have a tournament to crown it champion. In fact the NCAA has not endorsed one single BCS champion as being their champion.
The 4 team tournament system will start in 2014. That means that we will have two more BCS years but essentially the BCS is dead after that. The fans of college football all breathed a sigh of relief today knowing that the end of a horrible system is soon to be gone.
The new tournament will be a breath of fresh air for college football. I do however feel that the tournament should expand to at least 8 teams but hey you have to crawl before you walk. At least they are giving it a go. The tournament will mean more excitement and drama not only during the final games but during the season when teams will be fighting to get in. Sure, there will still be some controversy about some teams not getting in but at least you will have a semifinal and a final to let the teams battle it out. The way college football is set up with so many teams and many great ones will mean that only the best teams will play for the National Championship.
For decades the college football scene has needed a tournament and the fans have been demanding it. For a very long time it appeared that we would never see a tournament in college football. Now everyone can sleep easy knowing that the light is at the end of the tunnel.
